While snow might not seem like the end of the world, there are other issues that arise when it comes to winter weather. One of the biggest complications is ice dams, which leads to excessive water build up on your roof. If you’d like to avoid the complications of an ice dam, continue reading to learn how to defrost your roof.[/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space height=”50px”][vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner][vc_column_text]

What is an Ice Dam?

In short, an ice dam is the build-up of ice along the edge of your roof. The ice dam prevents any melted snow on your roof to run off, which can lead up to built-up water sitting on your roof.

This excessive amount of water can create leaks, sagging, and other roof damage. Because ice dams are so thick, it takes a long period of time for them to melt, which means unless you act fast, the weather is bound to impact your roof.

Avoid the stress of ice dams by knowing the proper way to take care of the problem before it has long term effects on your roof and your home.

How to Defrost Your Roof

There are a few preventative measures you can take so you’ll be ready to handle ice dams and avoid the additional risk of winter roof damage.

Install Heated Cables

Heated cables are a great solution to get rid of built-up ice around the edge of your house. All you have to do is install the cables around the outside perimeter of your roof, and once they’re turned on, they’ll conduct enough heat to start melting the ice dam. It’s a good idea to install them over the summer or fall so you’ll have plenty of time to prepare before winter weather hits.

Roof Rake

A roof rake can help remove excessive snow that builds up behind the ice dam. While it won’t get rid of the ice damn, using a roof rake can dislodge the built-up snow so it doesn’t start melting and cause excessive build-up.

Defrost Materials

Using rock salt or magnesium pellets is a great way to melt ice dams. The chemicals will start to slowly melt away the built-up ice particles, and while it might take some time, you’ll start seeing results after a day or two. Just make sure you don’t apply too much, or the pellets can damage your gutters or other metal materials.

Prevent Ice Dams

Things like an air leak, poor insulation, and damp attic space all lead to increases in winter roof damage. If you want to take preventative roofing measures to avoid the impact of ice dams, there are a few ways you can stop damage right at the source.

• Seal off all access points in your crawl space where warm air can come through
• Make sure there is proper insulation and ventilation in your attic to prevent excessive heat
